Injectable fillers are nonsurgical rejuvenation injections used to soften facial creases and wrinkles, plump thin lips, improve the appearance of recessed scars and restore volume and fullness to the skin. Different types of fillers are available such as natural proteins like collagen or hyaluronic acid, hydroxylapatite (which is a mineral compound found in human bones or coral) or your own fat. Before injections begin, skin sites are cleaned with an antibacterial soap and cooled with ice, and then a topical numbing agent is applied. The injections themselves take only a few seconds per site.

After the procedure, there may be slight swelling or bruising at the injection site, but this usually dissipates after a day.

The best candidates for injectable fillers are healthy, nonsmoking adults who have realistic goals and well-defined wrinkles or scars. Fillers do not accomplish the same results as Botox injections, which relax muscles. They frequently are used in concert with Botox to accomplish nonsurgical rejuvenation.
