A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure to raise and reshape sagging breasts. Excess skin around each areola is removed and the remaining skin is tightened, thus lifting and reshaping the breast. An average breast lift operation will take approximately one hour and is usually performed under a general anesthetic. A patient’s breasts may be swollen for a few days after surgery and minimal activity is recommended for 10 to 14 days.
Candidates for mastopexy are often healthy women who have finished having children and like the size of their breasts but want them reshaped and tighter. Men with a condition called gynecomastia causing overly large breasts are also candidates for the procedure, which can be accomplished with minimal scarring and aesthetic results regardless of gender.
